Postnatal Support

In many countries around the world, women are encouraged (and supported !) to rest, recover, and bond with their baby for a period of 30 to 40 days after they've given birth. Taking it slow, resting in bed, eating warm food, connecting with the baby... In Swahili the word Mamatoto, literally motherbaby, celebrates the new relationship between mum and baby: they are not two separate people, they become one fully connected entity.

In our western societies, it is not such an easy thing to do. With the current length of paternity leave in the UK, new mums often find themselves having to look after their baby and themselves after only two weeks. Some people may not have a "village" to rely on (distance, family circumstances), others might be hesitant to ask their mum or other family members for help. Sometimes it is easier to have an outsider come in to help, and discuss clearly people's expectations and boundaries.

Another reason why you might want to consider hiring a Doula: during the immediate post-partum period, it can be quite common for dads/partners to take on most of the house jobs when they are home. While this balance will suit many couples, others may feel that this is time they can't spend close to their partner and baby and bond as a new family unit. While it is perfectly normal for partners to take on more than usual, I want to help alleviate that load, and give everyone moments to slow down, rest, eat a nutritious meal,... Both mum and dad/partner.
